Over half of the companies in North America and Europe see Web 2.0 as a priority for next year, a report says.

The news comes as San Francisco plays host to the Web 2.0 conference on next generation of the web. Conference co-chair, Jennifer Pahlka stated that

"This is where we see the future of the web,"

"The companies making announcements here are building that future."

Forrester, the research company which carried out the Web 2.0 survey, believes the technologies being developed and unveiled over the coming days represent "a fundamentally new way" for businesses to communicate with employees and customers.

The report found that consumer giants such as General Motors, McDonald's, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance and Wells Fargo Bank will drive much of this growth and have already embraced tools like blogs, RSS feeds, podcasting and social networking.

Forrester analysed seven Web 2.0 categories: blogs, mashups, podcasting, RSS, social networking, widgets and wikis. Of these, social networks will attract the greatest levels of investment but even then that will be dwarfed by the multi million dollar revenues the software industry commands.

Oliver Young, the analyst behind the report states that,

"Advertising revenue has been hard to come by with even sites such as Facebook finding it hard to monetise their high volumes of traffic."

"Companies are now looking over their shoulder to the business market where even revenues of $50 (€30) per user per month are looking increasingly appealing."

He also points out that there will come a saturation point and investment will start to slow down as Web 2.0 applications become increasingly prevalent and absorbed into collaborative software packages.

Google and Yahoo to Share Web Advertisements http://www.redwindow.co.uk/articles/2008/04/11/google-and-yahoo-to-share-web-advertisements/ No Category
The pilot will allow search engine giant Google, to place ads alongside 3% of the search results on Yahoo's website.

Analysts say that the move is designed to frustrate Microsoft, which has offered to buy Yahoo for $44.6bn (€28.2bn), or extract a higher offer. The news came as both sides were reported to be forging other alliances.

According to the New York Times, one of those alliances involves Microsoft and News Corp discussing a joint bid for Yahoo. The idea behind the alliance would be to combine three of the world's most visited websites: MySpace, Yahoo and MSN.com.

News Corp had previously discussed working with Yahoo to see off Microsoft's offer and at the same time, according to the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo is looking to Time Warner's AOL to keep out of Microsoft's hands.

It reported that the deal would involve Time Warner making a cash investment for 20% of the merged firm, which Yahoo could then use to buy back shares.

Microsoft criticised Yahoo's advertising trial with Google, saying any lasting deal would not be in the consumers' interests.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's General Counsel stated that "Any definitive agreement between Yahoo and Google would consolidate over 90% of the search advertising market in Google's hands. This would make the market far less competitive."

But Yahoo said the testing did not necessarily mean that any further commercial relationship with Google will result, which saw investors reacting positively to the announcement, with Yahoo shares rising 7%.

Cowen and Co analyst, Jim Friedland stated in an interview that "Yahoo has made a really clever move here. It looked like Microsoft had all the cards, Yahoo is at least now able to use this for leverage to get Microsoft to pay more".

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer on Saturday gave Yahoo three weeks to agree to the company's offer or risk having the offer lowered.

Social Networks Show Evidence of Decline http://www.redwindow.co.uk/articles/2008/03/28/social-networks-show-evidence-of-decline/ No Category
Some leading industry experts are reporting that the social networks of the internet such as MySpace and Facebook are beginning to show trends of slowing down.

And there has been a 5% slowdown in new UK users to the larger social networks, Facebook and MySpace, between December 2007 and January this year.

But Alex Burmaster, an analyst at Nielsen Online which carried out the research that shows the decline, says:

"The slow down in social networks is being somewhat exaggerated. It's a natural form of any growth that we see in the online eco-system."

"Something starts from a very small base and grows very quickly. It becomes popular, but then it's only natural at some point that the growth has to stop, because it cannot carry on growing at that rate, because there is only so many people it can grow into."

So even though the big players in the social networking arena show evidence of a slow down in growth, they still dominate the attention of millions of users from around the globe.

This is still down to the fact that they provide the consumer to consumer service and still provide the tools which allow people to provide information to one another.

"I think you are going to see a lot of businesses coming up thinking how do we tap this power of social interaction, trusted friends and different advice, to make money,"

says Travis Katz, managing director, international, at MySpace.

"I think some will figure it out and others won't," he adds.

The free software system was launched in November 2007 and is currently being developed by an alliance of more than 30 companies including Google.

The first Android-enabled phone is expected to go on sale later this year.

One firm showing off a prototype phone was the UK processor designer ARM.

"It's really a demonstration vehicle rather than a full phone," Ian Drew of ARM told BBC News.

However, he said the wireless phone did show off several applications.

"What we are demonstrating on the Android platform is maps, browser, camera applications, multimedia, e-mail, and calendar - basically everything you'd expect on a mobile phone."

Poisoned Websites Attack Visitors http://www.redwindow.co.uk/articles/2008/01/18/poisoned-websites-attack-visitors/ No Category
Estimations of how many websites have been infected vary with security researchers at Scansafe predicting that it could be around 230, whereas researchers at Secure Works and Finjan believe that this figure may be as high as 10,000.

Once installed on a Windows machine, the malicious code can steal passwords, browser data as well as login names for bank accounts and even online games. The attack is proving hard to defend against for both sites being infected and PC users who are caught out.

All of the infected websites use the same type of server and open source content management software. However, security experts are still unable to determine all the ways that the sites are being compromised.

Mr Ben-Itzhak, Chief Technology Officer at Finjan said that "they are trying to exploit known vulnerabilities in open source content management software that the sites are using". Being able to identify the attack code on a site was extremely difficult, he said, because every time a new user visited, the code got a new, random five character name. So if a visitor returned, then the malicious code identified them and did not launch a second attack.

Hosting companies who own and run the servers on which small ecommerce firms place their websites need to view their security measures as a priority rather than something that they have to do, if such threats are to be dealt with.
